COMPASS : An Instrument for Measuring the Polarization of the CMB on Intermediate Angular Scales
COMPASS is an on-axis 2.6 meter telescope coupled to a correlation polarimeter. The entire instrument was built specifically for CMB polarization studies. Careful attention was given to receiver and optics design, stability of the pointing platform, avoidance of systematic offsets, and development of data analysis techniques. Here we describe the experiment, its strengths and weaknesses, and th...
متن کاملCosmological Magnetic Fields and Cmbr Polarization
A simple introduction to physics of CMBR polarization and the Faraday rotation of the latter in cosmic magnetic field is presented. The content of the lecture is the following: 1. Description of polarization of photons. 2. Polarization field of CMBR. 3. Faraday effect. 4. Cosmic magnetic fields. 5. Faraday rotation of CMBR polarization.
متن کاملLarge-scale polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation.
The anisotropy and polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) induced by the scalar and tensor metric perturbations are computed in the long-wavelength limit. It is found that the large-scale polarization of CMBR induced by the decaying tensor mode can reach a few percents. This is different from the scalar or inflation-induced tensor mode, whereas the polarization is at l...
متن کاملSmall-scale CMB polarization anisotropies due to tangled primordial magnetic fields
Tangled, primordial cosmic magnetic fields create small rotational velocity perturbations on the last scattering surface (LSS) of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). Such perturbations can contribute significantly to the CMBR temperature and polarization anisotropies at large l > 1000 or so, like the excess power detected by the CBI experiment. The magnetic contribution can be dis...
متن کاملSignatures of primordial helicity in the CMBR
We have studied ways in which helical primordial magnetic fields could be constrained by measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). If there were helical flows in the primordial plasma at the time of recombination, they would produce parity violating temperature-polarization correlations (C l and C EB l ). However, the magnitude of helical flows induced by helical magneti...
